Deputy President Kithure Kindiki appears to be pursuing a carefully calculated strategy in Mt Kenya: secure the region for President William Ruto in 2027 while positioning himself as a potential presidential candidate in 2032.
His emerging message is simple: Mt Kenya should support Ruto for another five years, retain the Deputy Presidency through Kindiki and then position the region for another shot at State House in 2032.
This could prove to be a powerful counter to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political strategy.
Rather than urging Mt Kenya to distance itself from Ruto, Kindiki is presenting continued cooperation with the President as a way of protecting the region’s influence in government while preparing for future succession.
The strategy also benefits Ruto. He gets a senior Mt Kenya politician campaigning for his re-election, while Kindiki gets five more years at the centre of power to strengthen his national profile.
The emerging political equation is therefore straightforward:
Ruto 2027 → Kindiki retains the DP seat → Mt Kenya positions Kindiki for 2032.
But Kindiki still faces a major challenge: turning his influence in Mt Kenya East into acceptance across the wider Mountain.
If he succeeds, he could become both Ruto’s most important political bridge to Mt Kenya and one of the strongest contenders for the region’s 2032 succession.
For now, Kindiki appears to be telling Mt Kenya that supporting Ruto in 2027 does not mean surrendering the region’s presidential ambitions — it could be the route to achieving them.
