UDA Secretary General Senator Hassan Omar Hassan has joined an East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) delegation in talks with Somalia's government on the country's integration into the East African Community (EAC).
The delegation, led by EALA Committee on Communication, Trade and Investment Chairperson Francine Rutazana, met Somalia's State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ali Mohamed Omar in Mogadishu.
The discussions focused on Somalia's progress in implementing its obligations under the EAC Treaty following its admission into the regional bloc in November 2023.
The Somali minister called on EAC member states to accelerate the implementation of their obligations towards Somalia, noting the country's progress in meeting its commitments to the regional community.
Rutazana commended Somalia for the steps it has taken towards fulfilling its EAC Treaty obligations.
She also expressed the committee's commitment to supporting initiatives by the Somali government aimed at meeting its regional obligations.
Hassan Omar, who is also an EALA member, called on EAC member states to embrace Somalia and work together towards building a region anchored on shared prosperity.
The UDA Secretary General said stronger cooperation among EAC countries would benefit citizens across East Africa by promoting regional integration and economic opportunities.
The engagement comes as Somalia continues its efforts to deepen its participation in EAC affairs and strengthen its integration into the regional bloc.
